Stop Blaming and Take Your Power Back: The Soul Recovery Practice of Owning Your Projections

Owning Your Projections Takes Your Power Back
Owning Your Projections Takes Your Power Back

Have you ever found yourself saying, “If they would just change, I could finally be happy”?Maybe it’s a partner, a parent, a friend, or a co-worker. Maybe it’s society or your circumstances. It’s a common feeling—and it’s deeply human. But it’s also one of the most powerful opportunities for healing.

In a recent episode of the Recover Your Soul Podcast, we explored one of the most transformational truths in the Soul Recovery journey: owning your projections. This practice can be uncomfortable at first, but it’s also liberating. It’s the moment when we stop pointing outward and begin turning inward with curiosity, compassion, and courage.

What Is Soul Recovery?

If this is your first time here—welcome. Soul Recovery is a spiritual path that blends personal empowerment, healing, and connection with a Higher Power. It was born from my own recovery from alcoholism, codependency, and the painful grip of control addiction.

The essence of Soul Recovery is this:👉 True healing doesn’t come from changing the world around you—it comes from transforming the world within you.

It invites us to look honestly at our beliefs, patterns, and emotional wounds, and to do the work to release what no longer serves us—so we can return to the wholeness of who we really are.

The 9-Step Soul Recovery Process is the heart of this work. It offers a clear, spiritual roadmap to guide your healing and transformation.

Why Projection Keeps Us Stuck

One of the ways we stay stuck in suffering is by unconsciously projecting our pain onto others. Projection is when we attribute our own unhealed wounds, limiting beliefs, and unmet needs to the people and circumstances around us—and then react as if they are the problem.

Sound familiar?

  • “My kids are making me miserable.”

  • “My partner never makes me feel seen.”

  • “The world is too broken for me to ever be happy.”

But here’s the truth we uncover in Soul Recovery: The way we interpret the world around us reflects the beliefs we hold within us.

That doesn’t mean people aren’t difficult or that real challenges don’t exist. It simply means that how we experience those things—and what they awaken in us—is an opportunity to heal and reclaim our power.

Owning Your Projections: A Soul Recovery Practice

In the episode, I walk you through a powerful exercise inspired by The Four Insights by Alberto Villoldo. It begins by identifying a situation where you feel stuck, hurt, or angry. Then, instead of telling the story about what they did, we take ownership by reframing it into what I call a "journey statement."

Let’s look at a couple of examples:

Original Story: “My ex is being so cruel to me.”

Journey Statement: “When I don’t set healthy boundaries or honor my own worth, I remain in situations that continue to hurt me.”

Original story: “I can’t be happy when there’s so much injustice in the world.”

Journey Statement: “When I stay rooted in despair, I disconnect from my ability to be a loving presence in the world.”

These shifts may seem subtle, but they’re powerful. They move us from victim consciousness into spiritual empowerment. They don’t deny the pain—they help us transform it.

Why This Episode Matters

Owning your projections is a practice that invites you to stop waiting for others to change so you can feel better—and start asking yourself what your experience is showing you about your inner world.

This is where true transformation begins.

Whether you’re dealing with addiction, codependency, anxiety, burnout, or just the weight of trying to be everything for everyone, this episode is for you. It offers both spiritual wisdom and practical guidance you can start using today.

You are not broken. You are whole. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Let Soul Recovery be the gentle, loving path that brings you back home to yourself.

This practice of owning our projections fits beautifully into the 9-Step Soul Recovery Process:

The 9-Step Soul Recovery Process

1. Ready for Awakening

Recognize that your suffering stems from your current perceptions, beliefs, patterns, and stories, and become aware that something within you is ready for change.

2. Release Control

Identify your attachment to control and the illusion that you can change external circumstances. Embrace the freedom of powerlessness—not as weakness, but as spiritual strength.

3. Discover Unhealthy Beliefs, Patterns, and Stories

Begin examining the old programming that has shaped how you show up in your relationships, work, and inner life. Recognize how these stories keep you stuck in suffering.

4. Open to Co-Creating with a Higher Power

Explore what Higher Power means to you—God, Spirit, Source, Light—and begin to build an authentic connection that helps guide your healing.

5. Release Old Patterns That No Longer Serve You

With compassion and forgiveness, release the patterns and beliefs that have outlived their usefulness. Honor what they taught you, but choose to let them go.

6. Embrace New Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story

Step into your updated mindset and begin rewriting your life story in a way that reflects your truth, your resilience, and your spiritual awakening.

7. Align with a New Perception

Consciously choose how you want to see yourself and the world around you. Let go of judgment and embrace a perception rooted in love and higher awareness.

8. Deepen Your Spiritual Practice

Commit to regular spiritual practices that keep you grounded, connected, and present. This is how you continue integrating what you’ve learned.

9. Shine Your Light

Live authentically. Let go of control and judgment. Be the light you are, and inspire others by walking your own Soul Recovery path with grace and integrity.
